Cleaning schedules and having a cleaning system might be exactly what you need. But who am I kidding? That sounds pretty intimidating and like it’s a lot of work. You don’t need to overwhelm yourself before you even get started. There are easier ways to keep a clean house. Simply keep on reading for my top, easy yet life-changing tips for a clean house.

10 LIFE-CHANGING TIPS FOR A CLEAN HOUSE

#1 Set a timer

minimalism

If your house gets pretty messy during the day it might feel too overwhelming to even start cleaning. You might feel like you don’t have enough time or don’t know when to start, so you keep postponing it.
But you don’t need six hours daily and you don’t need to deep clean your house every day or even week.

Simply set a timer, whenever you can (preferably at least once daily) to clean. It doesn’t have to be long, it can be for 10-20 min and I guarantee you, you’ll be surprised how much you can get done in that short amount of time if you don’t dedicate it to cleaning only, no social media, no work.

Set 5 min to clean the kitchen counter. Or 15 min to fold some clothes you threw on your bed in the morning.

It will all add up and you will be left with a cleaner house, every day, without feeling like you had to spend an eternity cleaning.
Also, just getting started can be the hardest part at times. This problem is totally eliminated when using a timer.

#2 Declutter

A closet full of clothes you never wear, 5 basically dried-up mascaras, and empty pens. Most of us have just too much of everything. It’s way harder to keep a clean house if there are unused, or worn out, broken items, unnecessary gadgets, and little, well, random things lying around everywhere.

Decluttering can be a real life-changer in keeping a cleaner more organized house, but it will also make you feel better, lighter, and more put together. Having your favorite clothes, items, gadgets, your kids age-appropriate toys on their place, working, ready to be used is such a game changer!

You don’t have to go crazy and empty out your whole house at once. Take it step by step. You can start with your closet or your kids’ old baby toys. Check what can be donated, shared with friends, sold and what has to be thrown away.

#3 Do a load of laundry daily

declutter

You know you’re behind in keeping a clean house when laundry is piling up and it seems like it will take you weeks to have it all clean and organized again. Hence, it’s so much better to throw in a load of laundry daily or every other day, depending on your/your family’s size and needs of course. It’s a super simple step, that can easily become a habit. One that will make a big, positive difference.

#4 Fold laundry immediately or at least on the same day

Sticking to the topic of laundry, not much better than endless dirty laundry waiting to be washed, are piles of clean clothes on your bed and after a few days also on the ground next to your bed. So make sure you fold and put your laundry away as soon as it’s dry or as soon as you can do it. As long as you make sure it’s still the same day.

#5 Have a place for everything

Decluttering will help immensely, but you will of course still have many different items lying around the house. Make sure they all have their designated place where they are stored. Whether it’s a closed, labeled bin, or a pen holder on your desk.

#6 Use bins/containers/organizers

It’s easier to have a spot for everything when you actually HAVE a spot for everything. Usually, it’s not easy to keep a closet, drawer, or even your fridge clean and well organized when there is just a bunch of stuff in it. It all gets mixed up after a few days. Using fridge organizers or bins for your kid’s toys can be a great solution. In that way, you always know where to put things but also, you’ll have a much easier time cleaning. Taking several containers out of the fridge to wipe the drawers is muuuuuch easier, than taking out all the produce one by one.

#7 Don’t buy into “container fetish

I’m sure I’m not the only one who actually feels inspired to be more organized and keep my house cleaner when I see cleaning and organizing videos online. Putting berries into airtight containers, having fridge or underwear organizers, and so on, can be super helpful and make your house look nicer too. However, you can easily go overboard with that. There is no need to spend too much money on different bins and containers, you will just end up with extra clutter.

I saw a video of this guy (would give him credit if I had any idea who he was) reacting to a type of “restock/organize my fridge with me” video where a woman even had special containers for juices and so she poured them out of their original boxes into her aesthetic looking (probably plastic) containers. He called it a “container fetish”. I had to laugh so hard, but it was also eye-opening in a way. How easy it is to overdo something. Sharing this as a reminder to take it easy and step by step. You don’t have to go all crazy in your pursuit of a cleaner, more organized home.

#8 Get safe yet efficient cleaning products

cleaning tips for a clean house

First of all, if you want to clean you need to have something to clean with. So make sure you have all the products you will need. Don’t worry, usually we need less than we think.
Once you do use cleaning products, spend your money on them and your time on cleaning with them, you want to, obviously, feel that your house is actually fresh and clean and safe for your family. Therefore make sure to choose your products wisely. Research a bit online or read the labels in the store. You could even make your own natural DIY cleaning products.

#9 Make your bed first thing in the morning

Yes, I have to mention this old, always-talked-about habit. Simply because it will set the tone for your entire day and it doesn’t take long. It also doesn’t have to be perfect, just do it.

#10 Clean as you go

organization

To actually keep your house clean on a daily basis you need to clean as you go. It is actually the easiest and probably the one way to do it. Yes, set timers to clean certain areas of your house, maybe more thoroughly, but otherwise clean as you go. For instance:

  • rinse the sink properly after brushing your teeth
  • put the dishes in the dishwasher after eating/ don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink
  • if you drop, break, or spill something, clean up immediately
  • take the trash out when you see that it’s getting full, don’t keep stacking stuff
  • wipe your kitchen counter and furniture after cooking
  • put spices away after using them
  • throw out the ice cream stick or empty bag of chips after you’re done eating
  • organize your fridge right after bringing groceries back home, especially if you do use special containers to store stuff
