Thinking about having a maternity photoshoot? Here are 30 cute pregnancy photo ideas that will inspire you to book your maternity shoot or even to do a self-portrait session.
What is the best time to take maternity photos?
In general, the best time for a maternity photoshoot is the 7th and 8th month of your pregnancy.
First of all, I do encourage you to take photos of yourself throughout your pregnancy. You might not feel the best or look your best, however your changing body is remarkable, every step of the way! And years down the line, when the nausea is forgotten and your baby has grown into a big kid you’ll appreciate having photos of your baby bump.

But in this post, we’re not just talking about mirror selfies but rather more professional, staged photos. The 7th and 8th month of pregnancy are perfect for a maternity shoot simply because you’re bump will be big enough to be the center of attention, as it should in this case. Most women also feel pretty okay at this point. The morning sickness in gone, and the extreme discomfort that can occur in the 9th month hasn’t yet kicked in yet.
However, every pregnancy is different. So if you’re showing way earlier and feel like you’re glowing in your 4th, 5th, or 6th month, go ahead and schedule a pregnancy photoshoot. Yes you can share the photos with friends and family, but at the end of the day, they are mostly for you. To see how beautiful, how strong, how caring, and simply freaking amazing you are!
Why should you take pregnancy photos?
Not sure if you need a maternity photoshoot? Here’s why you should have professional maternity photos taken or at least put some time aside to take your own, more thought through photos.
You’ll regret not having done it.
You deserve it.
You’re beautiful.

It’s a great memory to share with your child in the future.
They’ll be great as wall art for your bedroom or the nursery.
It will help you be present and grateful.
You’re probably busy feeling like crap half of the time and preparing for the baby the other half. Taking the time to pamper yourself, put some make up on, dress nice, and focus on your baby bump, will make you feel grateful, connected to your baby and to your partner (if they’re part of the photoshoot).
What to wear for maternity photos?
Whatever you feel beautiful, and confident in!
Long, flowy dresses are great for pregnancy photos.
Another great look are loose fit jeans, with a bralette or sports bra plus an unbuttoned oversized shirt.
But let your imagination run free. Some women like to go for a business look, with heels, pants, and a blazer, no bra. Others prefer to be fully covered and only show their belly off by putting their hands on it, while wearing a loose outfit.
It’s really up to you what you feel comfortable with, don’t think that a maternity photoshoot has to look a certain way or that you have to wear less than you’re comfortable with.
