challenges for a better life

You might want to take steps towards a more sustainable, simple, and conscious life, but you’re not sure where to start. To get inspired, stay motivated, and keep yourself accountable you might want to join one of the following 7 challenges for a better life.

“Happiness happens not by avoiding pain, but by avoiding luxury – by avoiding materialistic obsession.”- Abhijit Naskar

Here are 7 Challenges For A Better Life

1. The Busy Boycott Challenge

In an age of speed, I began to think, nothing could be more invigorating than going slow. In an age of distraction, nothing can feel more luxurious than paying attention.” – Pico Iyer

It’s a  21-day challenge meant to turn your busy life into a full one.

It’s so important that we slow down and be more mindful. Being productive and working hard is great but we might be too stressed out or caught up in rushing from one task to another that we forget to simply enjoy life. Let’s be more intentional with our time.

Slow down

2. The Slow Living Challenge

This 5-week challenge will take you through steps towards more simplicity as well as a more sustainable and healthy life.

“The trees that are slow to grow bear the best fruit.” –  Moliere

Each week has a theme and along with it come several tasks/practices that you should try to incorporate into your daily life that particular week. This could be for instance walking for a certain amount of time each day and connecting with nature.

Go vegan challenge

3. The Vegan Challenge

You could try out a 7-day or a 30-day vegan challenge.

If you’re looking to eat a more plant-based diet you could start the journey by joining a challenge.

Vegan is just pure love. Love for animals, love for the planet, and love for yourself.”

By going vegan you can improve your health, reduce your carbon footprint, and challenge your thinking at the same time. You will find more compassion towards all living beings. And of course, the obvious, you get to try out some new, delicious recipes.

You can start with the easier way, a 7-day challenge. It comes with a guide that talks about reasons for going vegan, nutrition, common concerns, and so on.

You can also learn more and get single recipes as well as full-week meal plans by doing the 30-day challenge.

Or you go for the third option. You choose the number of days you want to go plant-based. You can use recourses from both challenges to help you out and keep you motivated.

“The problem is that humans have victimized animals to such a degree that they are not even considered victims. They are not even considered at all. They are nothing; they don’t count; they don’t matter. They are commodities like TV sets and cell phones. We have actually turned animals into inanimate objects — sandwiches and shoes.” – Gary Yourofsky

Minimalism

4. The Minimalism Challenge

“A simple life is not seeing how little we can get by with—that’s poverty—but how efficiently we can put first things first. . . . When you’re clear about your purpose and your priorities, you can painlessly discard whatever does not support these, whether it’s clutter in your cabinets or commitments on your calendar.” – Victoria Moran

This challenge is actually called the 30-Day Minimalism Game.

The idea of it is that you find a family member or friend that (like you) is willing to get rid of some of his/her stuff each day, for 30 days.

It can be anything from clothes, and electronics to kitchenware. Each of you starts with one thing on the first day and then two things on the second day, three on the third, and so on. Whoever keeps it going the longest wins.

Well, that does sound really challenging, doesn’t it? Let’s go!

Straws

5. The Zero Waste Challenge

“Stop talking about sustainable development goals, and start practicing sustainable habits.” – Abhijit Naskar

By joining this challenge you’ll become more aware of how much waste you actually produce each week.

To start you need a clear bag that you’ll carry with you all week. In that bag, you’re supposed to collect all the trash you’d normally get rid of (everything that you don’t recycle or compost).

6. The ‘Three-Day’ Rule

This is an idea that will help you save money and become more aware of your spending and the desire for instant gratification.

The rule is that you don’t buy something if you’d only use it one time. If you still want it in three days though, you can go back and buy it.

It’s harder than it sounds as it also goes for coffee (like your daily Starbucks), drinks with friends, or fast food.

“Well, all I need is the air I breathe and a place to rest my head.”- OneRepublic

I’ve decided to include this concept in this post as it does sound like a challenge to me. You can choose the number of weeks you’ll do it for or just adopt it as a rule for life.

7. The Plastic-Free Challenge

Fortunately, more and more people take action to reduce plastic waste and you might be one of them. It’s ok if you’re just getting started, being aware that the problem exists is already a good thing.

Water and air, the two essential fluids on which all life depends, have become global garbage cans. – Jacques Yves Cousteau

To keep you from being too overwhelmed with all that there should be done and all the steps you should take to go plastic-free you can join this 31-day challenge.

It comes with a 31-day printable calendar with daily tasks and ideas for eco-friendly swaps for products as well as your habits.
